The red hue comes from traces of the mineral chromium.Ruby is the birthstone for July. It is also a traditional gift for those celebrating 15th or 40th wedding anniversaries.Rubies have a hardness of 9.0 on the Mohs hardness scale and only diamonds are harder, measuring a 10 on Mohs hardness scale.Originally, Burma was the main source for rubies. The deepest red rubies from Burma were referred to as "pigeon's blood". Today rubies are found in many countries including the United States. All natural rubies have imperfections in them along with needle-like inclusions, which are known as silk. When a gemologist is examining a ruby he will look for these inclusions to distinguish it from a synthetic stone.
