About Gold Filled:
Gold filled metal is my favorite metal to work with because unlike gold plated metals, gold fill can be a lifetime product. Gold plated items have a microscopic layer of gold applied to brass and the plating does not compose any measurable proportion of the product’s total weight. It is estimated to be 0.05% or less of the metal product. Gold plating will wear off rather quickly and expose the brass base product. It does not stand up to heat, water or wear over time.
Gold filled jewelry is the best alternative to solid gold jewelry because all you ever come into contact with is the layer of solid gold that is bonded to a core of semi-precious metal. All the gold is on the surface which offers the piece protection from tarnish and wear. Gold filled jewelry is regulated by the FTC and must contain a total weight of 1/20 (5%) gold.
I choose to work with 14-18k Gold filled metal because I feel like it offers the best balance between quality and cost.
